BUILDER INTERVIEW

Watch the quick video below to hear a few reasons why first-time boatbuilder Brian says the Puur kit is “magic”, helping him produce an artisan-quality boat.

The Puur Method for professional quality boatbuilding

ready to assemble

Every Puur hull kit is delivered with 100% of the required wood parts, machined to <1mm tolerances, and ready to assemble. No trips to the lumber yard. No saws.

You would think all kits were like that, but you’d be wrong.

The most critical part of building a professional-quality boat is the jig. The jig is what holds the skeleton in proper 3D alignment while you install the hull panels onto the skeleton. Crooked jig, crooked hull.

Unfortunately, building a 3-dimensionally true jig as large as a boat is very difficult. So, most amateur boats are crooked.

We hate crooked boats. So, we created the Puur SnapTrue jig, which is so innovative it was awarded a patent. (USPTO Patent # 11,008,079) There’s literally nothing else like it in the industry.

The Puur SnapTrue jig is a flat plate with deep carved slots that hold the skeleton parts in perfect alignment. Just snap the jig together and lay it on a table, then snap the skeleton parts into the jig’s deep, aligned slots. In minutes, the skeleton will stand in the jig in perfect alignment, without any fasteners. Presto: one perfectly true boat skeleton, ready for the installation of hull panels, as shown on the first image below.

The second image above shows the floor stringers installed in the same Puur 17 after it was rolled over, at about 30% complete, after more than 100 parts have been installed. The builder has just installed the 8’ cockpit floor stringers into factory-cut notches in the ribs — notches which were cut to <1mm tolerances for those stringers. Zero sanding was required to seat the stringers perfectly in notches. That is 1mm precision across 2500mm, after more than 100 hours of amateur assembly. That is a straight boat. That is the magic of the SnapTrue Jig.

Perfect alignment is more than just an aesthetic issue; it is also a productivity issue and a performance issue. Some other kits provide oversized parts so that you can trim the parts to fit a poorly aligned boat. But that approach requires more work from you, and it cannot hide the performance problems of a misaligned hull moving through the water.

That’s not the Puur way. Since we know the SnapTrue Jig will ensure your Puur sailboat is straight, we can manufacture parts to very tight tolerances – knowing that they will fit perfectly.

Faster, more beautiful boats — with less work. That is the Puur way.

BotBeveled precision

Unlike other kits on the market, which use 2D CNC, Puur uses true 3D milling that carves wonderfully complex parts. Our process takes about a week per kit, rather than a few hours like other kits, but it simplifies the assembly of our hull’s beautiful curves. It saves our builders hundreds of hours of time. And, it produces a stronger boat.

The left image below shows how the rib is perfectly beveled to mate with the curving hull panel and the spine, without any shaping by the builder. Precision beveled parts also take the guess-work out of angled assemblies. When the bevels are flush, the angle is correct - shown in the image at right.

Complete, Sail-away Kit

We’ve spent a huge amount of time sourcing every single part for your sailboat and making sure those parts work together properly. If you choose to buy the complete kit, you will not need to buy anything else to go sailing. Nothing.

In addition to the obvious things like a fully rigged mast, boom, sails, daggerboard, rudder, and tiller, we also provide every bolt, nut, washer, polymer nail, stir stick, cup, roller, spreader, tape, latex glove, and 5200 you will need to finish the boat. We provide all the glass cloth, epoxy, hardener, and pumps. We provide all the chainplates, turnbuckles, shackles, blocks and control lines, even cutting the lines to proper length for you. We provide oak dowels, precut to the needed length. Even the retaining pin that holds the tiller in the rudder head. And much more. 100%.

If you’re an experienced builder, you can pick and choose which things you want to source from us, but it you’re a first-time builder, you can relax and know we can provide you everything you need to finish your build and go sailing.

The Puur Hull Package includes a variety of specialized finishing tools custom-machined to fit the angles and corners of this particular hull. Puur even offers an easy-to-assemble CNC-cut construction table for builders with poor shop floors and builders who want a more comfortable working position than the floor.

The Puur Hull Package even includes metal rotisserie tools to take the drama out of flipping the hull over, as shown in the quick clip below.

Engineered to endure

We want your Puur sailboat to last a lifetime and beyond. So, we don’t take shortcuts to save a few bucks.

Here is a very small sample of the many ways we ensure your boat will endure:

  1. The Okoume 1088 skeleton includes 10 full-height, full-width ribs that mate tightly with the spine in strong half-lap joints.

  2. The 7-stay rig, including proper backstays at the transom, mates via Sta-Lok turnbuckles to heavy-duty chainplates, triple thru-bolted into the skeleton.

  3. The transom is reinforced with two 70x140x120mm Okoume blocks to provide a solid torque-transferring system for the rudder hardware.

  4. The rudder and keel are built around thick-walled aluminum tubes, encased in foam, and covered with a 25oz schedule of cloth and biax.

  5. The custom trailer is galvanized C-channel, with 7 padded rails and 13” wheels.
